This post is dedicated to my dear friend, Amara. I asked her for an idiom to write about, and she thought of “When Pigs Fly”, so that is what I’m going to write about. Firstly, I don’t know much about this idiom as far as the history without looking it up. If I had to guess, I would think someone came up with it during the medieval times. It just sounds medieval. I’ll look up facts about this idiom and write about it at the end of this post.
I know the saying “when pigs fly” is about something happening when the impossible occurs first. At least that’s how I take it. But if you’re like me, you believe anything can happen. Technically, this is an outdated saying anyway because you could literally put pigs on an airplane and transport them. It’s a cute idiom though…well, because you know, pigs are cute. And why pigs? Couldn’t it have been donkeys or buffalo instead? But I digress.
Over the past few months, I’ve been looking up whether blogging can still be successful in 2026 and beyond, and according to ChatGPT, it can still be. Per ChatGPT, though, the landscape of blogging has changed over the past decade and a half or so. When I think of my blogging adventure and the saying “When Pigs Fly,” I think of them on opposite sides of the spectrum. I know blogging takes more innovative thinking than it did in the past, and maybe it has become a more complicated and complex task to undertake, but I still believe blogging can be a success for me. “When pigs fly” never came into my mind when I thought of whether or not this blog would be successful. I just never thought about it.
I wonder how many times someone said “when pigs fly” to someone and their dreams actually did come true. Like, I wonder if someone ever said that to the Wright brothers when they were building airplanes. Or if someone said that to the very first person who thought up the automobile. I wonder if anyone ever proved someone wrong who said “when pigs fly” to them.
According to the Oxford Dictionary of Idioms, the true expression is “Pigs might (or can) fly,” and it means to be used ironically to express disbelief, and it dates back to the 17th century. The dictionary says the more modern phrase “when pigs fly” was first used in the 19th century by Lewis Carroll. That’s interesting. I don’t know. As I said, I think it’s a cute saying, but I also believe that anything is possible. Maybe I’m naive…or maybe it’s just that no one has ever said to me about my goals, “when pigs fly.”
Truth is, I’m running out of options. Outside of blogging, writing books, and playing poker, I don’t really know what else that I feel comfortable with doing to make money. I don’t need to become rich when it comes to my blogging and writing; I just want to be well off and be able to support myself. Maybe I’ll get this all down when pigs fly. I believe it’s possible.
